The tradition of spinning, weaving and knitting in Ireland is well documented from as early as the 1800's. Most small cottages in the South West of Donegal would process native Irish wool, dyeing and spinning the fibre into yarn, which was used to make knitted garments for personal use, or sometimes to be sold further afield.
Since the early 1900's 'Donegal' yarn production has seen many changes and has grown in size, but all the while it has maintained it's commitment to producing the finest traditional Irish spun yarns available.
The skills of the craftspeople employed at Donegal Yarns have been handed down through generations, with many of the employees having been with the company for many years and some are 2nd or 3rd generation workers. The mill uses state of the art machinery combinded with traditonal skills and knowledge, making sure that consistently beautiful yarns are made to the highest standard without sacrificing quality or heritage.
Our yarns are supported by beautiful knitwear patterns designed exclusively for Yarn Vibes by Irish designers, including Ailbíona McLochlainn and Colin Burke.
